This fluid – predominantly water with dissolved proteins and salts – leaks from the blood vessels into the surrounding tissue when the delicate balance between vascular pressure and lymphatic drainage is disturbed. Normally, the lymphatic system reliably removes excess tissue fluid. However, if this mechanism fails, fluid accumulates and visible or noticeable swelling occurs.

Vascular permeability plays a central role here: inflammation, injuries or systemic diseases can lead to the vascular walls becoming more permeable and more fluid leaking out than can be removed. It is important to understand that edema is not a disease in its own right, but always a symptom – a signal from the body that something is wrong with the fluid balance. This is precisely why an exact diagnosis of the root cause is so crucial, as a lasting improvement can only be achieved if the actual cause is treated.

<img decoding="async" class='wp-image-13462 avia-img-lazy-loading-not-13462 avia_image ' src="https://www.orthopaediezentrum-muenchenost.de/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/ozmo-blog-oedeme-06.jpg" alt='OZMO -
