What are inpatient operations?

Inpatient operations are surgical procedures that require an inpatient stay of at least one night (usually several) in a hospital due to their extent and the associated risks. The patient is accompanied by a doctor and cared for by experienced specialists in order to monitor the healing process in the first few days and to be able to act quickly to protect the patient in the event of possible complications. This includes, for example, monitoring the cardiovascular system to avoid complications from the after-effects of general anesthesia.

Also, if there is uncertainty about the stability of the patient’s overall health, a procedure that is normally performed as an outpatient surgery may require inpatient surgery. This may be the case, for example, in elderly and chronically ill patients. This protects the patient’s health, ensures safety (e.g. in the event of mobility problems) and monitors the patient’s state of health individually as required. In addition, wound care is optimally ensured, which is particularly important if the patient is left to his own devices in his home.

Fundamentally, however, modern medicine tends to make a hospital stay as short as possible and to discharge the patient home as soon as possible. This is not only related to the high cost of each hospital day, but also to the well-being of patients, who experience shows that they regenerate and recover from inpatient surgery better in a familiar environment than during hospitalization.

Procedure for inpatient surgery with OZMO

First, we welcome you to the Orthopedic Center Munich East (OZMO), where you will have a detailed conversation with one of our specialists and undergo the initial examinations. If, in the course of diagnostics, we determine the need for an intervention that must be implemented as an inpatient operation, we will explain the individual procedure to you personally and in detail.

As a rule, the first step is treatment planning, which is worked out around the inpatient surgery. The specialist will explain the operation to you, its procedure and the possible risks, but also the possible success of the treatment. At the same time, in consultation with the clinic you are considering, we will also look for a date, which will be communicated to you. In this way, you can mostly prepare for the inpatient surgery in peace. A few minutes before the operation, a consultation is held to prepare for the operation.

On the day of the inpatient surgery, you will come directly to the clinic where you will be admitted by expert staff and prepared for the procedure.
