Osteoarthritis of the shoulder (Omarthrosis)

Osteoarthritis is a wear and tear disease in which the cartilage layer in the joint is destroyed. In addition, ossifications (osteophytes) can develop in the shoulder, with which the body wants to strengthen the tissue under the cartilage layer. This can lead to pain and restricted movement in the shoulder. Osteoarthritis itself is not considered curable, but with good treatment the progression can be delayed to avoid reaching a terminal stage with the need for an artificial shoulder joint.

Collarbone fracture (clavicle fracture)

The clavicle is at the same time of enormous importance for the stability and mobility of the shoulders. The fracture of the so-called clavicle is usually caused by an accident and may require surgery, depending on the type of fracture. The healing process after a clavicle fracture can become complex, as the fracture must heal true to the axis to allow full mobility of the shoulders after healing.

Shoulder dislocation

The shoulder is considered to be a joint that is mainly moved by muscles. Compared to other joints, the glenoid cavity is smaller than the articular head, resulting in an increased range of motion. Shoulder dislocation refers to a serious dislocation of the joint, usually associated with a damaged joint capsule or persistent instability of the shoulder. In orthopedic treatment, therefore, the goal is not only to release the dislocation, but also to restore joint stability.

Free joint bodies

Free joint bodies are understood to be endogenous splinters and tissue particles that are present in the joint after injury and have been encapsulated by cartilaginous tissue. However, they can also result from diseases of the shoulder such as rheumatoid arthritis. The free joint bodies disrupt the smooth movement of the joint, irritate the tissue and can trigger painful inflammation. In most cases, they can only be removed by surgery.

Calcific shoulder (tendinosis calcarea)

When abnormal calcium deposits accumulate on the tendons leading to the rotator cuff, this can restrict the mobility of the joint and cause severe pain. In most cases, inflammation of the shoulder follows calcification. In these cases, drug dissolution of the calcium foci may be necessary or removal of the calcium deposits by shock wave therapy may be advised.

Impingement syndrome of the shoulder

Impingement syndrome refers to a condition of the shoulder in which there is a narrowing between the acromion bone and the rotator cuff tendons. The resulting friction leads to inflammation, which in turn damages the bursa and tendons up to the point of tendon rupture. Conservative therapies to stretch the joint capsule or strengthen the muscles, along with drug treatments, can provide relief. If this treatment is not sufficient, minimally invasive surgery offers the possibility of widening the constriction.
