Shoulder surgery – what syndromes or diseases can occur in the shoulder area?

One of the most common conditions affecting the shoulder is impingement syndrome, which is also known as constriction syndrome. So, in this syndrome, there is a narrowing in the shoulder area. The distance between the acromion and the humerus has decreased to 7 millimeters or even less. Most often, the disease is mistaken for normal tension in the early stages. Over time, shoulder pain intensifies and the supraspinatus tendon can also be affected. Shoulder impingnement can also lead to calcified shoulder. During shoulder surgery (arthroscopy), the distance between the acromion and humerus can be widened back to normal. Early shoulder surgery can also prevent a tendon tear or rotator cuff rupture (rotator cuff tear).

Also inflammatory processes can cause pain in the shoulder. Continuous mechanical stress on the shoulders in particular can lead to painful bursitis (inflammation of the bursa). An accident can also be the cause of bursitis, which can be treated conservatively and, in rare cases, surgically.

Shoulder surgery in Munich East – how does omarthrosis manifest itself?

Natural wear and tear processes can lead to osteoarthritis in the shoulders. However, shoulder osteoarthritis can also be caused by an undetected tendon tear in the shoulder or a fracture of the humeral head. Severe pain can occur especially with lateral arm movements or twisting movements of the upper body. If the omarthrosis is in an advanced stage, the shoulder pain also occurs in the resting position. In the case of advanced osteoarthritis, an artificial shoulder joint is implanted.

A thorough examination of your body, which includes mobility and coordination testing, is critical. Only in the second step are imaging diagnostics performed, which provide information about the exact situation in the shoulder area. The preliminary imaging examinations are essential to clarify, for example, the need for a shoulder prosthesis and a tear of the supraspinatus tendon or biceps tendon. Shoulder surgery – what is the exact procedure?

Before shoulder surgery, which is usually performed on an outpatient basis, anesthesia is induced by the anesthesiologist. This means for you that you must come sober. Shoulder surgery can be performed in different positions: You are in a supine or semi-sitting position, for example. During an arthroscopy, i.e. a reflection of the shoulder joint, a semi-sitting position is necessary.

After shoulder surgery, you will be taken to the recovery room to slowly wake up from the anesthesia. Depending on the type of surgery, you may be able to leave the clinic after a few hours. If an inpatient stay is necessary, you will be taken to the ward after the recovery room. All shoulder operations, whether outpatient or inpatient, are performed by our doctors at the Surgical Clinic in Munich-Bogenhausen. You can expect the highest level of medical care and hygiene.

What are the risks associated with shoulder surgery?

Whether shoulder surgery for osteoarthritis, torn shoulder tendons or shoulder instability, every procedure involves risks.

After shoulder surgery, swelling and bruising may occur in the shoulder area. They are normal and can be minimized by regular cooling. Postoperative bleeding or wound healing disorders are rather rare and can be treated well. After implantation of an artificial shoulder joint, there is a risk of so-called prosthesis dislocation. Various movements can cause the prosthesis to come loose or break completely out of its anchorage. Shoulder surgery – some tips for the time after

The time after shoulder surgery is crucial in order to be able to guarantee the desired success in the long term. You should pay attention to the following things after the surgery:
