Focus editors Andrea Bannert and Eva Vogel look into the question of why more and more young people are suffering from osteoarthritis and talk to OZMO specialist Professor Dr. Peter Diehl – orthopaedist and trauma surgeon. He explains that joint pain typical of osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear of the joint cartilage and often ultimately requires complete replacement of the joint. He explains this very vividly using the example of a car tire, which wears out over the years due to abrasion, so that you end up driving on the rim – i.e. running on your knee, for example, because there is no longer any cartilage with joint lubrication. But until then, there are many stages, early diagnoses and treatment options to talk about.
